How do you feel about yourself? When you apply the resources from the
multiple dimensions of health in ways that allow you to direct your growth,
assess deeply held values, deal effectively with change, and have satisfying
relationships with others, you are psychologically healthy. Research in the area of health psychology has
shown that there is a mind – body connection in which biological,
psychological, and social factors interact to influence health or illness. This is referred to as the biopsychological model. We know that your psychological state
has a significant effect on physical health: stress, depression, and anxiety
have been associated with how your immune system responds and can impair
physical health. Studies have shown that
terminally ill cancer patients who had better psychological health lived longer
lives and reported having does not just refer to your emotional state but also
to your cognitive and social functioning as well.
Psychological health has also been associated
with developing and
maintaining a positive self-esteem,
positive self-concept, and a
high level of emotional intelligence. Each of these concepts will be explained
further. However, as you will see,
psychological health is much more than just the absence of mental illness.
