Cardiovascular diseases were directly related to
38.5% of deaths in the United States in 2001 and indirectly related to a large
percentage of additional deaths. Heart
disease, stroke, and related blood vessel disorders combined to kill nearly 1
million Americans in 2001. This figure
represents more deaths than were caused by cancer, accidents, pneumonia,
influenza, lung disease, diabetes, and AIDS combined. CVD causes on out of every 2.6 deaths in the
United States. Indeed, cardiovascular
disease is our nation’s number one “killer”.
